Birth, family and acting start
Naseeruddin Shah was born into a Muslim family in Uttar Pradesh. He started acting career at the age of 14.
His first play
The first play that Naseer performed was Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice.

Son’s survives train accident
Naseeruddin and Ratna Pathak Shah’s son Imamuddin Shah fell from a local train in November 2006, and suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs. Then 22-year-old, Imamuddin fell on the tracks between Mahalaxmi and Mumbai Central stations. He was on his way to St Xavier’s College, where he was a student.

Naseeruddin Shah’s daughter Heeba Shah has worked in films like Missed Call, Mango Souffle and Ravi Goes to School. She has bagged a role in Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds.
Debut acclaim
Nishant, Shah’s Bollywood debut movie won the National Award for the best film and was also nominated for the Oscar. In 1977, he established a theatre group named Motley Productions with Benjamin Gilani and Tom Alter.

His Motley Productions produced their first play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett in 1979, which was based on absurdities of life. Naseeruddin played the character of Pozzo in the play.

Shah has written his memoir And Then One Day, published by Hamish Hamilton.
Never acted with Amitabh Bachchan
Naseeruddin Shah and Amitabh Bachchan have almost been cast together several times, but the projects never materialised. Thus, they have never acted together in any film in Bollywood.

He is the recipient of two civilian awards, the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, for his contribution in the field of arts.
